The 2018 Mazda6 is a midsize sedan known for its attractive looks, outstanding handling and lux interior. Buyers at who want their Mazda6 with well-appointed amenities will be happy to learn that the revised Maza6 lets you get high-end features like Nappa leather and Japanese Sen wood. The folks at the Tempe Mazda dealer told us the cabin is now even quieter when you’re driving on the highway and that customers are impressed by the new interior design.
Meanwhile, the 2018 Honda Accord is a midsize family sedan that competes with the Mazda6. Like the 6, the Accord also gets an update for 2018. It’s now lighter, shorter and wider than the 2017 model. We’ll take a look at these two sedans to see which one should be at the top of your shopping list if you’re considering buying a car in this segment.
There are a number of factors to consider when determining the actual cost of a vehicle, but for comparison’s sake, we’ll look at the MSRP. The 2018 Mazda6 is less expensive than the 2018 Honda Accord. The Mazda6 has a starting MSRP of $21,950, while the Accord starts at $23,570. So, when you buy the Mazda6, you’ll save some money over the more-costly Accord.
Both the Mazda6 and the Honda Accord have a choice of two engines. The 6’s top-of-the-line engine is a new 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 250 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The Accord’s top engine is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 252 hp and 273 lb.-ft. of torque. While the power output is closely matched, the Mazda6’s 2.5-liter block generates 37 more lb.-ft. of torque. This means there’s more force available to spin the wheels. Additionally, the 6’s turbocharged engine gets cylinder deactivation, which saves fuel by allowing the engine to run on two cylinders under light loads. You won’t find cylinder deactivation on any of the Accord’s engines.
The Mazda6 has a smaller turning ratio than the Accord, which means it’s easier to maneuver the Mazda6 in and out of tight spots than the Accord.
The Mazda6 and the Honda Accord are about the same length. But the Honda Accord is a bit wider than the Mazda6, making it more difficult to get in and out of the Accord in a crowded parking lot.
With the 2018 update, Mazda gives the interior of the Mazda6 a push that takes it into premium territory, with a sophisticated design and high-quality materials. While the Honda Accord also receives an upscale treatment inside, we think the Mazda6 has a more pleasing interior with a higher level of quality and refinement.
In the End
Although at first glance, you might conclude the 2018 Mazda6 and the 2018 Honda Accord are evenly matched, when you take a closer look, you’ll see first impressions can be deceiving. When you look closely and compare the 2018 Mazda6 and the 2018 Honda Accord side by side, you’ll discover the Mazda6 is the obvious choice.
